Giving the Recon Controller an obligatory heavy-handed-style twist and flex test, I felt that the grip on the handles was excellent and I was stunned to find that nothing moved not a creak was to be heard and the pad didn't bend or deform anywhere, which was oddly satisfying. It's not to say that the weight isn't perfect for reducing fatigue on your wrists and fingers for extended periods of play, it is however strangely unsettling for such a robust controller to feel this light given that it does in fact have rumble features too. Dues to the fact this is a wired entry and therefore contains no battery, the pad feels slightly underwhelming in hand. The first thing I noted about this peripheral was the weight. This is one of the first wired controllers I have seen in the wild that incorporates the newly styled concave D-Pad, and to its credit it certainly looks the part. More about that later though! The layout is compact and exacting, and the display is easily legible and vibrant, however they don't change colour as there are no RGB frills present here. Above this control panel is an array of LED-backlit icons, each one denoting which audio feature you currently have enabled, and additionally, whether you have Pro-Aim Focus mode enabled. From left to right the pad contains volume up and down buttons, a Super Human Hearing toggle to emphasize low-level enemy sounds such as footsteps, a mode button to cycle through features, a select button, a mic mute button and a pair of buttons to raise or lower the volume of your levels for in-game chat. In addition to an almost identical selection of buttons you would find on the brand new Xbox Series S/X controllers, which includes the newly added share button, Turtle Beach has shoehorned in not one but eight additional buttons to control a plethora of audiophile niches. Looking over the controller you cannot help but gaze upon the additional buttons the Recon controller holds. I want to have all the knowledge, I want to know all the possibilities, and I want to be able to descriptively share this all with you before you make any of your purchasing decisions. I always opt for the former, reading up the button combinations and features long before I have even inserted the USB cable. Removal and installation of the controller take a matter of seconds, allowing you to either read the accompanying documentation or launch it back into the box so that you can scratch your head at figuring out exactly how to operate all the bells and whistles for a while like a Neanderthal. The controller is seated in a protective vacuum-formed blister, the 3-meter braided USB-C connector cable is sheathed, bound by velcro, and in a separate compartment, the instructions and warranty are presented in a small card insert. Unboxing the Recon Controller there is a definite feel of quality to the whole package.
